Keeping your body physically well should not have to come with the mental stress that overcrowded gyms and complicated hours bring on. This is true, but it is important to recognize that setting yourself up by investing time in recognizing this logistical nonsense will lead to more effective and more pleasant workouts. So that’s a lot of talk about scheduling and maneuvering without much wellness mention. Be aware Rec and IM close super early on the weekends (6PM), so white is incredibly crowded come that time- especially on Sundays. Sure it’s the weekend, but it’s better to sweat out your sins from the night before ASAP. You’ll get an absolutely blissful workout if you go right at opening. Weekends- The gyms all open pretty late on the weekend (10AM/12PM), however they’re usually pretty empty at these times. ![]() Bottom line though, try and get to the gym sooner rather than later if you don’t want to be terrorized by fellow gym rats going over their 20min cardio limit and interrupting your lift to ask how long until they can use your station. Again, I recommend group fitness classes if this is the only time you’re available. All of the facilities flirt with capacity. IM typically is only at 50% capacity in the late afternoon.Įvening- Personally I love to workout at night, but the PSU fitness facilities in the evening are a nightmare. just go to IM and everything will be okay. White is almost guaranteed to have a line before you even get into the facility, and Rec will have a 10min line for treadmills, ellipticals, and bikes on top of the extreme gymtimidation that occurs (for a good reason) downstairs with people guarding their stations. If you show up to either of these fitness centers at 4PM and plan on having an efficient workout, expect to have your dreams shattered. Late Afternoon– AVOID WHITE AND REC! I’m serious. In a later post I plan to categorize each class according to intensity/state of mind they demand. Just be sure to arrive at least 5 minutes early to your class in case it’s full. If you’re under a time crunch, or you’re in-between classes, or you just don’t want to walk all the way to Rec or IM, fitness classes in the white building are a great alternative. White, on the other hand, typically hits around 80-90% capacity by 11AM. Midday- If you’re looking to hit the weight room or cardio machines in the morning it is best to go to Rec Hall or IM, as their capacity floats around 50-70%. If you get in early and grind it out, you’re most likely safe. ![]() White opens at 9AM, but already starts to fill up by 10. With a lot of students feeling the same way, Rec Hall and IM have no capacity issues in the morning. Morning- Rec Hall and IM both open earlier than I could ever dream of waking up. You can check the capacity of each of the three gym facilities in real time on the Penn State Strength and Fitness website, but here’s a pretty consummate breakdown. Okay the first animal to tackle is the bazaro hours. My goal this week is to crack open the code of how to get the most out of your gym time by navigating the awkward gym operating hours, avoiding the cardio machine lines, and highlighting the penn state fitness pro tips. This is not the most encouraging situation after you’ve barely been able to get yourself to put on tennis shoes and lug yourself there in the first place. ![]() ![]() The new normal is to walk into the White Building to be greeted by a entrance line 20 students deep. We’ve returned from our winter break expecting to upkeep our normal routines, including our quick cardio blasts or trips to gainzville. If you’re a gym bug like me, I know you’re fed up with Penn State’s Fitness facilities rn. ![]()
