![]() ![]() It is like the people claiming slavery is still keeping them from being a success. So, if you want to talk about lying I think who actually trains SD like their website claims is much more important that what fucking dead guy trained with what fucking dead guy. Gracie is the only that train it multiple times a week for both beginners and advanced. from other guy, again EVERY school has self defense listed on their website and virtually none of them train with strikes, the most you will see from them is standing ducking a punch to a throw "Which is why I mentioned that if you train with strikes" well, rickson really embarassed budojake a few months ago on his choke escape and bj was a bb at the time When I was a kid and taking karate and useless shit, i wish this would have been around.Ĭlick to expand."Years ago, one of the Gracie said that some bb could not escape a headlock and he should train self defense with the Gracie jiu jitsu." Most people don't like fighting which I think is ridiculous, but it is what it is.Īnd for the others crying about gracies self promoting so much- It is called running a SUCCESSFUL business.which most of you have never fucking done. Truth is most people don't want to train full mma sparring, they don't. It is not 100% guaranteeing you a victory, but it is putting you in a position to vastly improve your skills in self defense with a reasonable amount of training EVEN IT YOU HAVE A 40 AN HOUR A WEEK JOB. it is also very good for kids to be able to defend themselves or being able to defend yourself at a bar. these are not wannabe MMA fighter for the most part. Thing is, this is for the average joe to train to be able to defend himself against the average joe. GC is the best quick way to really up your self defense in a short time with a manageable number of moves and to graduate from GC you need to take a test and score really high on it-so you have to remember the moves and be able to demonstrate them which is really good to remember shit if you need it in real life. You cannot attend fight sim until you have mastered gracie combatives. It is not mma sparring but it is using BJJ with strikes in mind which over 95% of other bjj schools do not take into account at all. Those probably more than cover the combatives.Ī lot of their schools have fight sim once a week with gloves punches etc. MMA sparring teaches you how to apply a subset of your BJJ when someone else is actually trying to beat you up. Sports BJJ, imo, slowly makes you a better grappler. When I do actual sparring, I wonder how the fuck can I escape half guard when a bigger stronger guy shuts down my underhook and keeps punching my face. When I do self defense classes I feel like fighting is easy. Training for an "untrained" opponent doesn't toughen your skin. Compliant drilling doesn't help you figure out what works and what doesn't. I think the issue with all self defense classes is (having done krav maga before) the way they are trained. ![]() We also have MMA classes with light sparring where we focus on takedowns, wrestling and ground and pound.īetween the regular "sports" BJJ classes and MMA sparring, I don't really see the value of self defense BJJ. My gym recently introduced BJJ self defence classes which are essentially the Gracie Combatives (punch block series and all). You seem to be railing against Gracie "cultists" but you won't find many here. Personally I do BJJ mainly as a sport/hobby but I appreciate some SD training mixed in. I dont care if it's called GJJ or something else. If people at clubs practice with punches sometimes and does a bit of takedown against punchers etc then they're doing SD training. I've watched some of the Combatives stuff and messed around with it and it looks good to me. My club barely does any SD work and very litle work with gloves. I'm not insisting everyone follows Helio's set of SD moves, I don't even know what they are. The idea that practicing SD in some manner is worthless because a specific person got hurt by a guy like Hughes is risible. It's better to have practiced something than not to have. Plenty of sports BJJer have zero clue on effectively closing the distance for a takedown against someone actually punching and kicking. Same with breaking out of a standing headlock efficiently enough not to be hurt before you remember what to do. Unless you've actually practiced it, under relevant conditions, it's all just words and theory. This "I would just do X" stuff is what the old TMA bullshitters used to say. And if you've already eaten a whack or two, it ain't that easy. Click to expand.Well you say a "a simple elbow escape and or upa will off balance him" but not all thugs are totally clueless. ![]()
