But Stubby’s newfound knowledge served him well when he sniffed out a German soldier hiding in nearby bushes in Argonne. He had to remain tied up whenever prisoners were being brought in. He had learned to distinguish between the German gray serge and U.S.’s khaki doughboy uniform. Stubby achieved his first military rank, private first class, on April 5, 2018.Īfter recovering from a war wound north of Mandres-aux-Quatre-Tours at a place knows as “Dead Man’s Curve,” in July of 1918 Stubby savagely attacked a soldier at Chateâu Thierry. Running up and down the trenches, Stubby bit at and barked at the soldiers in order to get them to safety. The 26th took part in 17 engagements and four major offensives over a total of 210 days.Īt Chemin des Dames, where his own life was saved by his mask, Stubby was the first to smell the gas from the early morning assault. Stubby was even issued a gas mask (which likely saved his life on Saint Patrick’s Day of 1918), although it didn’t fit his physiognomy well. He was popular with the crew of the SS Minnesota and one of the onboard machinists fashioned a set of metal “dog tags” for him.ĭespite not serving in an official capacity after their landing in France, Colonel John Henry Parker, the regiment leader gave special orders for Stubby to remain. Stubby became the 102nd's unofficial mascot after he was discovered during the crossing. Conroy then hid Stubby in the ship’s coal bin down in the hold. After traveling to Newport News, Virginia, via rail, the 102nd boarded the freighter SS Minnesota, Stubby concealed in Conroy’s Army-issue greatcoat. Dogs were forbidden by the military, but the 102nd was preparing to ship out after their three-month training and he didn’t want to leave Stubby behind. In September of 1917, Conroy was faced with a dilemma. Brindle patterned, he was considered a dog of “unknown breed,” a Bull (or Boston) Terrier mutt. Robert Conroy.īorn in either 1916 or 1917, Sergeant Stubby’s provenance is unknown. Stubby lingered near the field after his first appearance, eventually becoming the fastest of friends with a 25-year-old private, J. In July of 1917, the soon to be named “Stubby,” and founding canine of the Army, wandered onto the field of Camp Yale (Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut) where the 102nd Infantry, 26th “Yankee” Division, were doing exercises in preparation for deployment. The Red Cross also used dogs to aid wounded and dying men by negotiating the battlefields with medical supplies and water or simply offering comfort. Pedigreed dogs, such as Jack Russell terriers (rat chasers), Siberian huskies (transport), Airedale terriers (messengers), and German shepherds, Alsatian sheep dogs and Chienes de Brie (sentry duty), were favored. Stemming from a rich tradition dating back centuries, military trained dogs and their training schools were in place among many of the countries that became involved in World War I prior to the conflict. Because I bought OmniFocus 1 I have free upgrade to the second version of it. OmniFocus Pro 3.2 Maomnifocus, omnifocus 3, omnifocus web, omnifocus android, omnifocus windows, omnifocus vs things, omnifocus review, omnifocus app, omnifocus vs todoist, omnifocus vs things 3, omnifocus alternative, omnifocus 4 The Pro version ha a couple important features that the Standard version doesnât: A coworker suggested if I wanted to âup my gameâ on GTD then I need to pick up OmniFocus. Use OmniFocus to accomplish more every day. OmniFocus costs US$39.99 for the Standard edition (iOS), US$59.98 for Pro (iOS), US$39.99 for the Standard edition (macOS), and US$79.99 for Pro (macOS). Support Visuals Producer with 5 Euros and download a set of 50 sounds for use in videos and movies, royalty-free. If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps to support it, our future would be more secure. Visuals Producer is editorially independent, meaning we set our own agenda and are not paid by the vendors of the products that we review, the articles that we write or the videos that we make. And if you also have OmniFocus 3 on iOS (which I didn’t test), you can also enjoy Siri’s company with Capture and Shortcuts support. But with the ability to create highly flexible custom Perspectives, set due and deferred dates, and have customisable Notifications, it’s the first such tool that really lets you manage your busy schedule and act as a personal assistant. It can be used as a simple task manager as well. It can be used as a project management app without the progress and cost-estimation tools. Filters allow you to set up a view so that you, for example, only list tasks that are part of one of two projects which are due tomorrow, estimated to take only 30 minutes and have tags for priority set to urgent and equipment all arrived and ready to use.Īnd really, it’s here that OmniFocus 3 (Pro) sets itself apart from all other task management apps I’ve tried. However, the real power of custom Perspectives is in the Filter section. In version 3, creating a custom Perspective comes with a whole slew of customisation capabilities, including icon, icon colour, the ability to turn it on in the Sidebar, to view it in columns, fluid or standard display mode, to group and sort them. In that case, you can create a custom Perspective. With tags added to tasks and actions, and the Tags sidebar tab, you can already zoom in on tasks categorised under each individual tag, but what if you’d like to see tasks that are categorised under two or more tags, and what if you don’t want to include tasks that are part of a project? The Pro version offers AppleScript as well, but I’ll focus on custom Perspectives instead. Now, in OmniFocus Pro, you can also create custom Perspectives, customise the Sidebar and zoom in to specific aspects of your list using the Focus feature. Of course, you have a global shortcut key that allows you to enter tasks at the spur of the moment. You can add email messages to your Inbox by forwarding the email to a special address you can get on Omni Group’s Sync server so that you don’t need to type it in yourself, which is a very simple and quick way to add tasks to your lists. you have Inbox, Projects and Forecast perspectives to look at your tasks. The other management functionality of OmniFocus has remained the way it was before, i.e. For example, Tags could include your clients’ names, rental equipment items, photo/film locations, actors, etc. They add context – yes, Context – to tasks.Īnd yes, the change of terminology does make it clearer what context is: it can be anything you like, from priorities to any sort of categorisation system you might prefer. Only Martians won’t know about tags and what they represent. Whereas previous OmniFocus versions insisted on the use of “Contexts” as one way of looking at your task list, the new version has replaced this concept with the one we’ve all become masters at: tags and tagging. You still view your tasks and reminders in many different ways, but those ways have become more clearly defined. In the new version, this complexity has gone. In previous versions, that made the app somewhat complicated to use for some people. OmniFocus always has been powerful in that it gives you multiple, different views of your tasks. After having read the OmniFocus 3 web page, I decided to give OmniFocus 3 for macOS a try and see how a photographer or video creator could benefit from it. Since the Omni Group released OmniFocus many years ago, it’s been the most powerful task manager available on the macOS platform. Pack 9 (After skipping 8 for personal reasons]: Even better than Pack 7, with 92-rated Real Madrid winger Lucas Vazquez's TOTS item proving to be a most excellent player pick. Immobile would have cost me 29,000 coins on the transfer market so this was a huge season-ending win. The other gold players were mostly forgettable, but an 83-rated Arturo Vidal made for a tiny bonus. Pack 7 : Best one yet! I claimed 87-rated Ciro Immobile as my player pick, having to reject David Silva (86-rated) in the process. Bayern star full-back Alphonso Davies (LB, 81) should have been a bright spot given his 96-rated pace, but I already had him untradeable and so had to sling the card into an SBC. My player pick was spent on Muniain (LW, 83), while other items included Andrej Kramaric (ST, 82), Lucas Olaza (LB, 77) and Rasmus Falk (CM, 76). Pack 4: Another one that made the crowd go mild. Duvan Zapata (ST, 83) was my player pick, with the other cards comprising Rodrygo (RW, 79), Daniel Didavi (CAM, 75), Samuel Kalu (LM, 76) and another Benjamin Andre (CDM, 80). Pack 3: A disappointing pack overall – but again, it was free, so no biggie. Pack 2: 84-rated Pizzi was my player pick (with Harry Maguire as an alternate option), while I also scored Donny van de Beek (CM, 83), Rodrigo Betancur (CM, 79), Gonzalo Martinez (CAM, 76) and Juan Gabriel Rodriguez (CB, 75). Javi Martinez (CDM, 81), Benjamin Andre (CDM, 80) and Petr Sevcik (CM, 76) rounded out a stellar selection. Pack 1: Niklas Sule, the towering 84-rated Bayern centre-back, got the pack off to a dream start, and I nabbed 82-rated Danilo Pereira’s Champions League card with my player pick. This will vary from player to player, but here’s what I earned from my Prime Gaming packs so far: Whether you are sure kinky sex acts are your vibe or you’d like to test the waters, Kink provides the videos you need to help get you where you want to go - sexually speaking, that is.ĭusk is a subscription-based site, but it offers a variety of educational articles as well as very sexy viewing materials for women. Keeping your body physically well should not have to come with the mental stress that overcrowded gyms and complicated hours bring on. This is true, but it is important to recognize that setting yourself up by investing time in recognizing this logistical nonsense will lead to more effective and more pleasant workouts. So that’s a lot of talk about scheduling and maneuvering without much wellness mention. Be aware Rec and IM close super early on the weekends (6PM), so white is incredibly crowded come that time- especially on Sundays. Sure it’s the weekend, but it’s better to sweat out your sins from the night before ASAP. You’ll get an absolutely blissful workout if you go right at opening. Weekends- The gyms all open pretty late on the weekend (10AM/12PM), however they’re usually pretty empty at these times. Bottom line though, try and get to the gym sooner rather than later if you don’t want to be terrorized by fellow gym rats going over their 20min cardio limit and interrupting your lift to ask how long until they can use your station. Again, I recommend group fitness classes if this is the only time you’re available. All of the facilities flirt with capacity. IM typically is only at 50% capacity in the late afternoon.Įvening- Personally I love to workout at night, but the PSU fitness facilities in the evening are a nightmare. just go to IM and everything will be okay. White is almost guaranteed to have a line before you even get into the facility, and Rec will have a 10min line for treadmills, ellipticals, and bikes on top of the extreme gymtimidation that occurs (for a good reason) downstairs with people guarding their stations. If you show up to either of these fitness centers at 4PM and plan on having an efficient workout, expect to have your dreams shattered. Late Afternoon– AVOID WHITE AND REC! I’m serious. In a later post I plan to categorize each class according to intensity/state of mind they demand. Just be sure to arrive at least 5 minutes early to your class in case it’s full. If you’re under a time crunch, or you’re in-between classes, or you just don’t want to walk all the way to Rec or IM, fitness classes in the white building are a great alternative. White, on the other hand, typically hits around 80-90% capacity by 11AM. Midday- If you’re looking to hit the weight room or cardio machines in the morning it is best to go to Rec Hall or IM, as their capacity floats around 50-70%. If you get in early and grind it out, you’re most likely safe. White opens at 9AM, but already starts to fill up by 10. With a lot of students feeling the same way, Rec Hall and IM have no capacity issues in the morning. Morning- Rec Hall and IM both open earlier than I could ever dream of waking up. You can check the capacity of each of the three gym facilities in real time on the Penn State Strength and Fitness website, but here’s a pretty consummate breakdown. Okay the first animal to tackle is the bazaro hours. My goal this week is to crack open the code of how to get the most out of your gym time by navigating the awkward gym operating hours, avoiding the cardio machine lines, and highlighting the penn state fitness pro tips. This is not the most encouraging situation after you’ve barely been able to get yourself to put on tennis shoes and lug yourself there in the first place. The new normal is to walk into the White Building to be greeted by a entrance line 20 students deep. We’ve returned from our winter break expecting to upkeep our normal routines, including our quick cardio blasts or trips to gainzville. If you’re a gym bug like me, I know you’re fed up with Penn State’s Fitness facilities rn. Their telescopes must therefore always be positioned high above the ground or in space. Infrared and ultraviolet light are affected more dramatically by the Earth's atmosphere. By viewing from the other side of the sky, the Hubble Space Telescope allows astronomers to see the universe without the distortion and filtering that occurs as light passes through the Earth's atmosphere. Radio and optical telescopes can be used on Earth, but some resolution is lost due to Earth's atmosphere. An example of a modern radio telescope is The Very Large Array in New Mexico (right), composed of 27 antennas electronically combined to give the resolution of an antenna 36 kilometers (22 miles) across. We generate a large amount of noise on Earth as well, so smaller telescopes would lose some astronomical radio signals amid our daily production of rock music, television broadcasts and cellular phone calls. Radio telescopes also need to be large in order to overcome the radio noise, or "snow," that naturally occurs in radio receivers. Low-frequency radio waves would be unfocused and fuzzy in smaller telescopes. When most people think of telescopes they think of visible light, or optical, telescopes. Most of the universe is invisible to us because we only see the visible light portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. But as the technology advances and becomes more specialized, differences among telescope designs become more pronounced As our knowledge of physics improves, scientists are able to develop increasingly superior telescopes. Although the first telescope was created 400 years ago, we didn't have a complete picture of the electromagnetic spectrum until the early part of this century. This energy is in the form of electromagnetic waves. The atomic matter that forms the telescope has to somehow interpret the energy emitted from astronomical objects. Telescopes rely on the interaction between energy and matter. Radio has long wavelengths and low energies, while gamma rays have very short wavelengths and high energies. This results in dissimilar, incompatible detecting devices. Instead, astrophysicists use special detectors to observe gamma rays and to figure out where they come from in the sky.The differing wavelengths among the various energies create different instrumental needs. They go straight through optics used for other wavelengths, making them impossible to reflect or refract. Gamma rays are the universe’s most energetic form of light. Engineers at NASA’s Goddard and Marshall Space Flight Centers have designed mirrors like these for missions like the X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) and the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). Since there’s a lot of empty space in the middle of a single paraboloid, X-ray mirrors incorporate multiple mirrors as nested onion-like shells. This is called a grazing incidence mirror. To detect them, engineers turn the mirrors on their sides so the X-rays can skip off the surface. X-rays can simply pass through the atoms that make up most telescope mirrors. X-ray mirrors use the slightly angled side of the paraboloid. The Webb mirror, for example, is coated with a thin layer of gold so that it can reflect infrared light. Telescope mirrors are coated with different materials depending on the color of the light they need to reflect. (Backyard telescopes can also have mirrors, too.)Īn X-ray Mirror Assembly built for the X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission consists of a primary and secondary mirror, each containing 812 nested foil mirror segments. Large mirrors can be made thinner and lighter than lenses of the same size, which makes reflecting scopes ideal for sending to space. Reflecting telescopesĪ telescope that uses a mirror as its primary optical element is called a reflecting telescope. The first telescopes, developed in the 1600s, were refractors, as are many backyard telescopes today.īut very large lenses make refracting telescopes large and heavy, which makes them difficult to use in space. Like eyeglasses, the lenses bend, or refract, light passing through them. Refracting telescopesĪ telescope using a lens for its main optical element is called a refracting telescope. The larger a mirror or lens, the more light it collects, and the better its ability to detect fainter objects. The size of the main mirror or lens determines how well a telescope can collect light. Astronomers observe distant cosmic objects using telescopes that employ mirrors and lenses to gather and focus light. |
